A K-8 school in East Harlem that partners with More2Life needs our help. Once labeled a “failure factory” by critics, the school has new leadership that is bright and energetic and working very hard to create a learning environment where the students can feel safe and learn without worrying about the basic necessities of life.
Unfortunately, the schoolchildren face very difficult odds:
- Approximately 30% live in temporary housing (homeless shelters, doubled up with other families, etc.)
- More than 90% of their students live below the poverty line
- 99% of students qualify for free or reduced cost lunches
- In 2016, only 2% of the students scored a 3 or higher on the state math exam while only 10% scored a 3 or higher on the state reading exam. That trajectory is improving with the school’s new leadership
The school has 280 students and we’re hoping to raise $10,000 to help the principal and staff provide basic necessities to make the lives of the children easier and accelerate the speed of learning.
Last year, the school was able to acquire and install a washer and dryer on site to allow students to wash their clothes if they must rewear items frequently and/or access to clean clothing is too expensive.
This year, we believe we can help them do even more. They need to provide basic clothing and personal hygiene items to many of their students. They also want to create more incentives to bolster learning and reward success.
If 280 people (one for each of their 280 students) were to donate just $35 we could reach this goal. Every dollar raised will go directly to help the schoolchildren. To help make a difference, please click the DONATE button below:
